A WORD FROM OUR FOUNDER
BRANDY SANDERS
I started the Kierrah Foundation to help young
women ages 17 to 26 deal with the lifelong adverse effects of being placed in
the foster care system. As a mother, I know
that consistency, love and a foundation of values and respect will ensure that
a child can grow into adulthood with the promise of a bright future. This
can all be stripped away however when a child misses these things by being
placed in foster care and bounced from one home to another. I have seen
vibrant young women dull under the uncertainty and oppression of experiencing
all that is wrong with foster care: inconsistency, estrangement from family,
friends, neighborhoods and any sort of sense of community, being unappreciated
and sometimes abused by those that are supposed to care, and lacking the
constant love and guidance of a caregiver over the course of childhood. Once
these children turn 18, many of them are handed a bus token and a blanket and shown the door. I have
watched so many of these young women fall victim to pimps and street hustlers and move into the homes of abusive men simply to have a place to stay. I have witness them selling drugs to survive and joining gangs just to have a sense of belonging to someone. It breaks my heart. Many of these young women who have children of their own now, live in constant fear that for some reason, any reason, someone is going to take their kids from them. Far too often I see these children who do not know how to just be children because of the fears and uncertainties in their little lives. I am under no illusion that I can fix it all. But as my late husband always said to me, "Brandy, just do your part." I have committed my life to doing everything that is in my power for these girls and their children. And with your help, I know we can do more.
May our journey be Blessed
The Kierrah Foundation is a grassroots non profit organization. We are set aside and we do not solicit or accept funds from any City, County, State or Federal Agencies. We are not affiliated nor do we collaborate with the foster care system in anyway.
We depend on money raised from our fundraising events and the generosity of the community and individuals just like you to cover the cost of day to day operations.
